AFTER RETIREMENT, RUBIO KEEPS ON COACHING

David Rubio is the former head Arizona Wildcats Women’s Volleyball coach. He held this position for 31 seasons before retiring in 2023.

Rubio decided to coach women’s volleyball when the opportunity was provided to him. He shared that the reason that he continued coaching for so long at the U of A was because of success! He wanted to keep the success going. Rubio believes that the key to success is team chemistry because it helps the team bond which helps them play better. For him, the most important thing to remember in volleyball is that the sport is difficult and really hard to play.

Rubio has also provided coaching clinics for local volleyball coaches to help improve volleyball coaching in Tucson. When he isn’t coaching volleyball Rubio enjoys surfing, reading, and working out.

Recently, Rubio decided to begin providing the opportunity for youth in Tucson to attend his clinics and participate in fall and winter leagues. He began these programs because he believes that the kids needed some good instruction at that level. I participated in his first fall league and enjoyed improving my skills as we learned drills and played games twice a week during the eight-week program. If you like volleyball, I would recommend that you register for one of Rubio’s clinics or camps.
