The Tucson Country Day School Veterans Day assembly included a variety of fun-filled activities. It took place the Friday before Veterans Day, Nov. 8. Preschool through eighth-grade students were gathered there at the Activity Center for the patriotic remembrance day. Twenty-three veterans were on stage, sharing their names and explaining their position and branch of the military. The veterans are all connected to the students here at TCDS—they are family members of different students. Two middle school teachers, Mr. Ishmael Soto and Mr. Brian Kievit, are veterans and were part of the ceremony. They included rapping about themselves, which was an interesting display of humor and fun.
The veterans and their families were treated to a continental breakfast at the school catered by a local company. During the assembly, the middle school choir and orchestra sang and played a number of patriotic songs. Two military officials unfolded and folded the American flag as the middle school Student Council explained many different facts about how the flag was created. There was a big American flag balloon art decoration using the traditional colors of red, white and blue. Miniature American flags were passed out among the student crowd, and they were waving rapidly at key moments.
It was a momentous time of honor to feel thankful for Veterans protecting our country. These Veterans have served with honor, and we should help them the best that we can.
