BLACK HISTORY MONTH

Black History Month is an important time when we celebrate the achievements, lives, and cultures of African Americans. Black History Month evolved throughout the 1900s. Black History Month was originally started by Carter G. Woodson, “The Father of Black History,” who wanted a way to highlight the contributions that Black people brought to the American community.

In 1976, President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month, urging Americans to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” While this celebration started in the United States, Black History Month is now also observed in Canada, Ireland, Germany, Costa Rica,Australia, the United Kingdom and more.

One event that has particularly put the spotlight on this year’s Black History Month is the achievement of actress Quinta Brunson–winning an Emmy award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, 2023. Brunson’s award was for her role in “Abbott Elementary.” Brunson is the second black actress in the category to win this prestigious award since Isabel Sanford won in 1981 for her role in “The Jeffersons.”

“Abbott Elementary” is a heartfelt and engaging comedy, which follows the determined lives of a group of teachers who work in one of the most underfunded public schools, yet love teaching the children. You can watch “Abbott Elementary” on ABC.

At 34, Brunson has established herself as a director, writer, actress, and comedian.Brunson’s true passion is comedy. She loves making people laugh and is known for her work in movies and shows. You can follow Brunson on Instagram @quintab.

Black History Month is a vital time of recognition. You can participate by listening to Black music, going to Black history museums, watching documentaries or Black films, or supporting Black owned restaurants or businesses. I hope you find Black History Month to be an important time of reflecting on the ways in which African American contributions to the American culture are significant.
