Bear Essential News offers five classroom presentations for Tucson and Phoenix-area students in grades 2 through 8.

These free presentations promote strong writing and interviewing skills and teach the fundamentals of journalism. We also encourage students and teachers to participate in our award- winning Young Reporters Program. Not only do young writers learn the basics of reporting, they also have the opportunity to have their news stories printed in Bear Essential newspapers throughout Arizona!

  1. How Bear Essential News is Made (for grades 2–4). Starting with the reporter’s initial story idea, Bear’s editors walk students through the process of creating a newspaper. Students get to see and handle a variety of fascinating materials, including original front cover art. Bear’s secrets are revealed!
  2. Introduction to Journalism: the 5 W’s & H (for grades 3–4). Bear’s editors introduce students to the basic tenets of journalism. What events in the world are newsworthy? Why did they occur? Who has the info you need for your news story? Students learn to identify the 5 W’s and H in a story and how to structure their stories.
  3. Bear’s Writing Tips (for grades 3–8). Bear Essential News has earned honors from the Tucson Area Reading Council and the Arizona Reading Association/International Reading Association. But what makes Bear’s stories so special? Students can learn what it takes to be a good writer from this common core-based presentation.
  4. Interviewing Skills (for grades 4–8). This presentation introduces students to the many facets of interviewing. From selecting appropriate interview subjects to structuring questions, students learn how to gather information and to communicate effectively. 5. Journalism as a Career (for grades 4–8).

Students learn what it takes to be a journalist, from having an inquisitive personality to education requirements. Bear’s editors give candid responses and share the ups and downs of life as a reporter or editor. All presentations are FREE and designed to be interactive, informative and fun!

Each presentation is about 50 minutes. If you’d like more information, or to schedule a presentation for your class or a group of classes, please call the appropriate number for your area.

CAMP ZOO AT THE PHOENIX ZOO

Welcome to Camp Zoo 2022: Build the Zoo!
This year, Camp is all about finding out what it takes to help save animals. Campers will discover the different ways we look after the animals at the Zoo, while tackling challenges to help save their counterparts in the wild.
They will spend the mornings on the trails, enjoying close encounters with the animals and learning from their care teams, as well as playing games and hanging out in the splash pads. The afternoons will be spent working in groups indoors to tackle design challenges related to their theme, and more Camp Zoo-style fun!
Incorporating STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, math) principles and going through the design, build, test, and revise process, campers will use what they’ve learned about the animals to create real-world solutions and top off the week presenting their design.

MARICOPA COUNTY READS–Oceans of Possibilities

Arizona Summer Reading Program encourages readers of all ages to dive into the ocean depths this summer and participate in the OCEANS OF POSSIBILITIES Summer Reading Program.

The Arizona State Library, Archives and Public Records are partnering with 235 public libraries and neighborhood branches statewide to launch the program. The start date may vary from library to library, but generally runs from June 1 through August 1 and plays a vital role in helping to reduce what is known as the “Summer Slide”—the learning loss experienced while transitioning between school years.

“The Arizona Summer Reading Program is one of the state’s major annual community literacy efforts,” said State Librarian Holly Henley. “Libraries are looking forward to welcoming children and families to their buildings to participate in person this summer.”

Each Arizona library is encouraged to adapt the OCEANS OF POSSIBILITIES theme and resources to meet the needs and assets of their own community. Most libraries begin planning for summer reading in September to ensure their community has a quality experience and to support literacy when kids are not attending school.

The Arizona Summer Reading Program encourages readers of all ages to read 20 minutes a day and offers library events like scavenger hunts, storytimes with sea animal experts, book bingo, ocean-related art projects, science, and engineering experiments, and more. Families are also invited to sign up to keep track of the total minutes read throughout the summer, either online or by using a paper gameboard.

    WISHES FOR TEACHERS

ARIZONA’S TEACHERS CAN APPLY FOR $5,000 GRANT TO BENEFIT THEIR CLASSROOMS

OR SCHOOLS FROM FIESTA BOWL CHARITIES WISHES FOR TEACHERS

Applications now open on WishesForTeachers.org; At least 100 teachers will

    have wish granted

SCOTTSDALE, AZ – Arizona’s teachers can now submit their wish on how they

would use $5,000 for their classrooms. Fiesta Bowl Charities Wishes for

Teachers will provide more than 100 grants of $5,000 each to Arizona K-12

    public or charter school teachers.

Teachers fill out an online application form at WishesForTeachers.org

detailing their school or classroom need and, after meeting the criteria,

wishes are selected by random drawing to receive a $5,000 grant. The

application period runs through Friday, November 3.

“Wishes for Teachers hits the nail right on the head of the Fiesta Bowl

mission to support Arizonans through education, youth, and sports,” said

Steve Leach, Fiesta Bowl Chairman of the Board of Directors. “Education is

the foundation for success in life, from youth through adulthood. We’re

honored to be able to equip our teachers with extra tools and make them even

more impactful than they are today.”

Fiesta Bowl Charities will match up to $500,000 in contributions, with the

ultimate goal to substantially increase the overall funding from 2016 and the

number of teachers who will enjoy a $5,000 wish.

“We couldn’t have been more pleased with our first year’s achievements

in helping Arizona’s teachers make their classrooms better. Teachers give

so much in their daily commitment to building our future leaders,” said

Fiesta Bowl Executive Director Mike Nealy. “Wishes for Teachers gives a

boost of support for our teachers and helps them create new educational

tracks, purchase much-needed current-day equipment and inspire growth in

    their students.”

Fiesta Bowl Charities created Wishes for Teachers in 2016 and granted

$500,000 to 100 teachers statewide, with each teacher receiving $5,000 to

bolster resources in schools and benefit students. The Fiesta Bowl

organization saw that many teachers spent money on their own to enhance their

classroom experience and developed a program to aid teachers in that effort.

To see a complete list of the wishes granted, please visit

    WishesForTeachers.org.

In addition to the financial gift, selected teachers have the opportunity to

be recognized in the National Bank of Arizona Fiesta Bowl Parade and on-field

at the 29th Annual Cactus Bowl at Chase Field.
