Kindness has been tossed around a lot these days. And Qizai, the 7-year-old panda who is the only brown panda in the world, knows how it feels to be treated unkindly. Qizai was abandoned by his mother at 2 months old. He was weak and neglected. He was found in the Qinling Mountains in China.
The Disney On Ice show, Worlds of Enchantment, came to Tucson in October. It was very enchanting indeed because it had classics like Cars, The Little Mermaid, Toy Story and more. I had the opportunity to attend a media event to help kick
off the first show! A group of local Tucson elementary kids were there to attend a reading from the book Cars, take pictures and talk to two ice skaters from the show followed by a pizza party. This got the kids so excited and pumped to see the show!

Kicking off its new entertainment season, Nightfall is in its 26th year and it’s loaded with ghoulishly new and returning favorites of comedy, drama, music and scary good times dwelling within Tucson’s one-of-a-kind haunted town. It’s a frightful feast specifically for Halloween. With new and old attractions, walkthroughs, haunted houses and shows, there are hours of fun for every member of the family.
We took a four-day trip to Fort Worth, Texas. We left Tucson at 5 p.m. and we got there at 8:40 a.m. In Fort Worth, the time is 3 hours ahead, so in Arizona time we got there at 5:40 a.m.
We stayed in a hotel called Best Western. It was a very fun and clean hotel. We got to meet relatives that haven’t seen me since I was just 1.
Attention all space fans! The NASA Goddard Space Flight Center has launched a new kid’s magazine called NASA Next! It was created for kids in grades 5–8. The magazine breaks down science and space to a kid’s level. It is only available online. You can download the latest issue for free on any device. Kids can tell their teachers about the NASA Next Educators page so they can learn more about space and science in the classroom. The first issue was presented on May 23, 2016, and the fall issue has already been released.
Did you know the Tucson Community Food Bank relies on about 120 employees?
It takes a lot more than employees to run a food bank!
Doug Ruopp was my guide at the food bank, and Cindy Montano assigned us into jobs.
My job was to put two boxes of raisins and a box of walnuts into a bag. Outside, Ruopp told me that the Community Food Bank helped people get their own gardens. They bring dirt, soil, seeds and even worms to get gardens started.
Would you ever want to eat an insect? Now you can! On Sept. 18, several thousand people went to the Arizona Insect Festival hosted by the Department of Entomology (the study of insects) at the University of Arizona. The festival, which started in 2011, is held in September each year. There were sautéed mealworms and onions on a chip, cricket cookies and protein bars. It may sound gross, but my brother, dad and I tried them and they were actually very good.
Do you know what is special about September 17? Not only is it Constitution Day, which celebrates our Constitution signing but also the day that Tumacacori National Historical Park has it’s naturalization ceremony.
