Live Theater Does Day of the Dead

I was able to go to the dress rehearsal of “El Dia De Los Muertos: The Musical” at Live Theatre Workshop. It is about a woman who loses her pet. She finds out that Day of the Dead is not scary, but happy. She makes an undead friend and has to find a way to get back to the living world and not stay in the undead world.

The musical is directed and written by Michael Martinez. I went backstage and saw actors putting on their makeup. The makeup artist draws how the faces should look and then the

actors do their own makeup. It takes about 45 minutes to an hour for the actors to apply their makeup.

I met one of the actresses, Anel. She has been doing shows since 1994. Brian is the guitar player who converts piano music to guitar music. I also met Deborah Daun who is the marketing director.

Martinez came up with this idea for the musical because he loves the celebration and the local parade. He wanted the costumes to be authentic and to look like the dresses in Mexico. He started as the piano player then became the owner of LTW. During the year, there are nine adult shows and six kid shows. I can’t wait until the show opens. The show runs Sundays, Oct. 1 through Nov. 5.
