It Could Happen to You!

In 2017, I learned that anything could happen to your body as you are growing up and you need to be prepared and aware of ways to keep your body healthy.

At the end of the school year in 2nd second grade, I was given a hearing test at my school, the results were not good and I had to go down to the school district audiology department. I had to go and see my Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist, Dr. Hurley. Dr. Hurley checked my ears and ran more very boring hearing tests that I also did not do well on.

We knew there was problem.

My mom told me that I would need to wear hearing aids.

I was not sure what to think about it because I do not know anyone who wears hearing aids my age. I went to Advanced Hearing Group with Dr. Thornton and she did another boring hearing test but she also did a mold in my ear for my hearing aids. It was so cool I got to pick out the design I wanted and the colors. I was supposed to play on the Arizona Saints Youth Football League that Fall but I wasn't able to play due to the fact that I was loosing my hearing and not sure what was going on. My mom didn’t think it would be safe for me to play.

The head coach of the AZ Saints Kory Fuller let me be the assistant coach at a game in Chandler; I did the coin toss and received a AZ Saints T-shirt. Mr. Fuller did this for me since I was unable to play on his football team. I was sad because I have been waiting to play football but I feel a bit better because my mom showed me a video of Derrick Coleman of the Cowboys and he is completely deaf, my mom and I were both inspired by his mom and their story.

I will play football again! I am adjusting to my hearing aids.

At first the attention at school was annoying, but I have gotten used to it. The kindergarten kids always stop me and ask what’s in my ears? I help my teacher Ms. Patty in my class because I can hear who is talking with my super sonic hearing!! My mom found a super hero from Marvel named Blue Ear who is now my favorite comic!! I am in the process of writing a book to encourage hard of hearing kids like me to be strong and that we are still COOL; in fact we are even cooler!

Ask your mom to get your ears checked cause, it could happen to you!
